Lăng Thoại Thánh nằm trong quần thể lăng Gia Long, tại vùng đồi thông cạnh chân dãy núi Thiên Thọ (Định Môn, Hương Trà), với sự yên bình, tĩnh mịch và trầm mặc, gợi nhắc về những năm tháng hào hùng của triều đại này.
Người Mẹ Vĩ Đại Của Vị Vua Đầu Tiên Nhà Nguyễn
Nguyễn Thị Hoàn, còn được biết đến với danh hiệu Hiếu Khang hoàng hậu, sinh năm 1736, là một người phụ nữ ôn nhu và được vua Gia Long vô cùng kính trọng. Bà không chỉ là thân mẫu của một hoàng đế, mà còn là người đã nuôi dưỡng và dìu dắt Gia Long trong những năm tháng gian khó. Trong cuộc hành trình chiến đấu vì đại cuộc thống nhất đất nước, vua Gia Long luôn nhận được sự động viên, khuyên bảo từ người mẹ kiên trung. Bà là ngọn đèn soi sáng cho Gia Long, từ những lúc lưu lạc trên biển cho đến khi ông lên ngôi hoàng đế.
Sau khi lên ngôi, vua Gia Long đã tôn bà làm Hoàng Thái Hậu và đích thân cho xây dựng cung Trường Thọ để tỏ lòng hiếu thảo. Năm 1811, khi bà qua đời, bà được an táng tại lăng Thoại Thánh, được vua Gia Long truy tôn với thụy hiệu đầy trang trọng: “Ý Tĩnh Huệ Cung An Trinh Từ Hiến Hiếu Khang Hoàng Hậu.” Bài vị của bà hiện được hiệp thờ cùng Hưng Tổ tại Hưng Miếu trong Đại Nội, ghi dấu một giai đoạn lịch sử quan trọng của triều Nguyễn.
Lăng Thoại Thánh – Công Trình Kiến Trúc Vang Bóng Một Thời
Lăng Thoại Thánh không chỉ là nơi an nghỉ của một Hoàng Thái Hậu, mà còn là biểu tượng kiến trúc nghệ thuật tiêu biểu của triều Nguyễn. Với lối kiến trúc quay về hướng Nam, sử dụng núi Rệ làm tiền án, khu vực lăng bao gồm cả phần lăng mộ và tẩm điện (nơi thờ tự), tạo nên một không gian yên tĩnh, trang nghiêm.
Những bậc thang dẫn từ sân chầu lên khu vực tẩm mộ được trang trí bởi các cặp rồng chầu đối xứng – biểu tượng quyền uy của thời đại. Họa tiết rồng tại đây mang đậm nét đặc trưng của mỹ thuật triều Nguyễn, với vẩy rồng, vây và đuôi được khắc họa chi tiết và tinh xảo. Những đôi long vân cuộn sóng mạnh mẽ, biểu hiện sức sống và sự trường tồn của dòng dõi hoàng tộc. Mặc dù trải qua nhiều biến cố lịch sử và sự tàn phá của thời gian, lăng Thoại Thánh vẫn giữ được những nét đẹp cổ kính và đầy uy nghi.
Phần mộ của hoàng hậu được xây bằng đá, với thiết kế giản dị nhưng không kém phần trang trọng. Hương án đặt trước mộ là một khối đá nguyên khối, trang trí bằng hoa văn kỷ hà tinh tế, tạo nên vẻ cổ kính và linh thiêng. Điều này phản ánh rõ phong cách kiến trúc của những lăng tẩm đầu triều Nguyễn, không phô trương, mà tập trung vào sự giản dị và trang trọng.

Trong những năm gần đây, nhằm bảo tồn và phát huy giá trị của Di tích Lịch sử Văn hóa Quốc gia đặc biệt, tỉnh Thừa Thiên Huế đã đầu tư hơn 73 tỷ đồng để phục hồi và tu bổ điện Thoại Thánh. Công trình đang dần được hồi sinh qua việc khôi phục nền móng, tường bao và các họa tiết trang trí đặc trưng. Việc tu bổ này không chỉ góp phần bảo tồn di sản quý giá, mà còn mang lại cơ hội để thế hệ sau hiểu rõ hơn về giai đoạn hoàng kim của lịch sử Việt Nam.
Quần thể lăng Thoại Thánh không chỉ là nơi an nghỉ của Hiếu Khang Hoàng hậu – vị Hoàng Thái Hậu đầu tiên của triều Nguyễn, mà còn là minh chứng cho một thời kỳ lịch sử vang dội, khi gia tộc Nguyễn Phúc vươn lên thống nhất giang sơn. Tại đây, những giá trị kiến trúc và văn hóa đặc sắc của triều Nguyễn vẫn còn in đậm, từ những nét chạm trổ tinh xảo trên cặp rồng chầu đến không gian trầm mặc giữa núi rừng Thiên Thọ. Mặc dù thời gian và chiến tranh đã bào mòn nhiều dấu vết, nhưng những tàn tích còn lại vẫn đủ sức gợi nhớ về một thời hoàng kim của đất nước.
