Hanoi has taken a significant step toward promoting eco-friendly transportation with the launch of its first dedicated bike lane on February 1st, 2024. Spanning 4 kilometers across the Cau Giay and Dong Da districts, this car-free corridor offers cyclists a safe and accessible route along the scenic To Lich River. The Hanoi bike lane project aligns with the city’s broader goal of enhancing non-motorized transport options.
The project is part of the city’s broader initiative to encourage bicycle use and reduce reliance on motorized vehicles. Construction teams have been working extensively to clean up the area, mark lanes, and install bicycle stations to ensure a seamless riding experience along the Hanoi bike lane.
Hanoi bike lane: Integration with public transport and bike-sharing options
The new bike lane directly connects to two major public transit hubs – the Lang Station of the Cat Linh-Ha Dong metro line, and Station No. 8 of the Nhon-Hanoi Station metro line. This integration with the city’s growing public transportation network aims to make it easier for commuters to complete their journeys by bicycle.
Additionally, six public bicycle stations will be set up along the lane, offering around 100 standard and electric bicycles for public use. “We want to provide residents with convenient bike-sharing options to complement the dedicated Hanoi bike lane,” said Nguyen Hoang, director of Hanoi’s Department of Transportation.
The VND65 billion (USD$2.64 million) bike lane project has been in the works since 2019 when the city first repurposed the riverside path for pedestrians and cyclists. However, over the years the route fell into disrepair and became littered with trash, necessitating the current redevelopment effort.
Hanoi bike lane: Plans for cycling infrastructure expansion
In addition to the 4-kilometer riverside route, Hanoi also plans to create bike-exclusive sidewalks around Hoa Binh Park and along Hoang Minh Thao Street in Bac Tu Liem District. When complete, the total length of dedicated bike infrastructure in the city will reach 5.7 kilometers.
“This is just the beginning,” Hoang stated. “Hanoi is committed to expanding our network of bike lanes and improving cycling infrastructure citywide. We want to make it safer and more convenient for people to choose pedal power over polluting vehicles by expanding the Hanoi bike lane system.”
