Geography & Biodiversity of Pu Luong Nature Reserve
Established in 1999, Pu Luong Nature Reserve covers approximately 17,171 hectares of dramatic limestone mountains and lush valleys. The name “Pu Luong” in the Thai language means “the highest peak” — and fittingly, the reserve’s highest point reaches 1,700 m above sea level, keeping the climate pleasantly cool year-round, especially welcome during the summer months.
Pu Luong is one of the few places in Vietnam where relatively intact primary forest still thrives on a limestone terrain. The reserve is home to over 1,644 plant species, including rare endemics such as ironwood (nghien), sen mat, and a remarkable variety of wild orchids.
On the wildlife side, Pu Luong shelters more than 130 bird species, nearly 50 mammal species, and numerous reptiles and amphibians endemic to Indochina. Most notably, the white-rumped black langur — a critically endangered primate found in only a handful of places on earth — still roams the old-growth forests here.

Natural Landscapes
What makes Pu Luong Nature Reserve truly unforgettable is its rare combination of primary forest, open valleys, waterfalls, and terraced rice fields. During the rice harvest season (September–October), the terraces cascade down the hillsides in brilliant shades of gold — a scene that rivals Mu Cang Chai or Sapa, but without the crowds.
Thac Hieu and Thac Mu are the two standout natural attractions, where crystal-clear water tumbles down from limestone cliffs into natural pools deep in the forest — perfect for resting after a long day on the trail.

Local Culture
Living in and around the Pu Luong Nature Reserve are communities of White Thai and Muong people with a rich and distinctive culture. Traditional stilt houses, handwoven brocade textiles, and a way of life deeply tied to the forest create a cultural depth that is hard to find anywhere else. Visitors can stay at locally run homestays, sharing meals of bamboo-tube rice (com lam), grilled free-range chicken, and rice wine around a fire.
Best Time to Visit
- Rice harvest season (September–October): The most beautiful time of year, ideal for photography.
- Blossom season (March–April): The hills come alive with flowers and the weather is mild and pleasant.
- Trekking and forest exploration should always be done with a local guide for safety and to respect the ecosystem.
